Context

The Give Blockchain (later rebranded to Lemonaide) is a currency created with web3 blockchain technology with the idea to help incentivize nonprofits to use GIVE so they could increase transparency for donors.

Problem

Currently, nonprofits have a really hard time convincing people to give up money (donating) to support their causes. Most people don't want to give away their money without knowing or trusting the organization.

How might we increase trust in the donor by increasing transparency in the nonprofit?

Cryptocurrency?

Before I was hired my team thought that blockchain technology could be a solution to this problem (listed above). Unless you're already familiar with cryptocurrency, learning about it is confusing enough, attempting to convince someone to invest in it or use it to donate is much more difficult.

I sat down with my Product Manager (Nathan Crowley) and we set up some goals:

Goal #1: Increase communication

These designs (below) is the workflow for a nonprofit to create an impact update and publish it for all to see.

This image (above) is inside the web app, signed in as a nonprofit user. The nonprofit is creating a new impact update.

After a nonprofit publishes the update, it will be live on a blog like webpage. This webpage can be shared across social platforms or linked directly to their website.

Research

We set out to do some generative research and discover more about the nonprofit space. (See above). Some nonprofit Facebook spaces we've discovered and are currently learning from are:

Survey

After learning a decent amount on Facebook, we started to ask questions that we wanted a lot of responses to (and that's where a survey comes in). I used the tool Tally.so to build a survey—I love Tally because you can do so many different types of questions and conditional logic to filter out participants that don't match what you're looking for.

Results

We're currently still conducting product market fit research to see where our product offering can increase transparency for nonprofits so donors trust organizations enough to donate.

Thoughts

If I were to redo how the organization were setup, I wouldn't have hired a big team so quickly, and done more of the research before seeking venture capital investments. We have a highly talented team that doesn't know what to build yet because we haven't learned enough about what's missing in the market and how we can fit in.
